La revue des revues
Malgré la crise de la presse écrite, on assiste à un élan créatif des magazines indépendants. Des revues se montent, collaborent entre elles et tentent de "faire le buzz". Aucun annonceur (ou très peu) n'ose investir dans les pages de ces médias qui n'ont pas toujours de locaux, et pour qui les comités de rédaction ont l'apparence de réunions entre amis. Certains se croisent, comme à l'occasion du salon Quatre Revues, déjà organisé à Paris, Bruxelles et Berlin par la bande des quatre (Entrisme, KAISERIN, Face b et Poli). L'occasion d'un aperçu, non exhaustif, de ces jeunes ouvrages que l'on trouve plus facilement (c'est dommage) dans les librairies d'art que dans les kiosques. Vaste programme pour la revue bisannuelle - Kaiserin signifie "Impératrice" en allemand - qui rappelle que la politique et la sexualité ont à voir avec l'art. Boys Keep Swinging
KAISERIN, the independently published magazine for 'boys with problems' is always eagerly awaited by Grafik. Beautifully packaged, tastefully designed, full of interesting content and semi - (and sometimes completely) naked rather beautiful young men. What's not to like?
Issue seven is packed full of very cool stuff - there's Thomas Dozol's series Once and For All which features shots of real and projected tattoos; ONS Rock Hard, which features Jan Holger-Mauss's partially erased porn mags; and Tony Regazzoni's Megaphallithes - a series of megaliths shown in various stages of erm, arousal. Grafik was ever-so-slightly disappointed with the rather more demure approach shown in the current issue, but we're sure normal service (and full frontals) will be resumed soon. La revue KAISERIN rend hommage aux Cockettes, drag-queens sous acide des seventies
La revue gay française KAISERIN propose un hors-série consacré aux Cockettes, la fameuse troupe de drags hippies de San Francisco (qui comptait notamment dans ses rangs Sylvester et Divine), dont la carrière fut courte (1969-1972), mais l’influence majeure dans les premières années de libération homosexuelle. Un bel hommage, en images et en textes, où le photographe Bertrand Le Pluard et ses modèles s’amusent à recréer cette folle communauté et ses personnages flamboyants. “Imaginez l’éjaculation créative d’une bande de freaks sous acide animée par le désir et le plaisir de faire, de s’exprimer, de délirer, d’inventer, de créer, d’être ensemble, de baiser et de ré-inventer leurs vies”, écrit Bertrand Le Pluard (alias The Bearded Lady).
Truman Capote lança leur renommée au niveau national mais leur passage à New York, devant un parterre de VIP impressionnant (John Lennon, Gore Vidal…), fut un désastre. Le foutoir sans nom de San Francisco passa mal dans Big Apple. De retour en Californie, des dissensions se firent sentir dans le groupe, et la belle utopie prit fin à l’orée des années 70. En 2002, un documentaire intitulé The Cockettes, de David Weissman et Bill Weber, retraçait leur folle épopée. / Yannick Barbe

Le revue semestrielle hétéro-friendly KAISERIN, sous-titrée "a magazine for boys with problems", propose pour son sixième numéro un été "minimal queer". Soit, selon Arnaud-Pierre Fourtané, co-fondateur de la publication avec Didier Fitan, "un état d'esprit qui serait peut-être une revendication queer sans les artifices: l'opposé du maximal camp". L'objet réunit travaux d'artistes (collages de Jorge Pedro Núñez, projets de piscines par le groupe d'architecture La Ville Rayée, dessins à l'encre de Chine de Gilles Balmet, portraits d'ados tueurs en série de Marc Pusch), textes (dont une nouvelle du poète new-yorkais Douglas A. Martin), séries de photos, playlist (kill the dj.), vraies fausses pages de black shopping pour expier ses idées noires. Arty, soigné et délibérément instinctif, KAISERIN se fait l'écrin d'une sélection parmi les corps, les oeuvres et les objets de l'époque. "Le magazine se construit sur cinq mois ce qui laisse le temps de peaufiner la moindre ligature, chaque retour à la ligne ou recadrage photo, car oui on recadre, retouche, change la colorométrie de toutes les images que nos contributeurs nous envoient, surtout s'ils sont photographes. La précision me fascine. Je suis scorpion ascendant scorpion." Non subventionnée, l'entreprise a conquis la fidélité d'un public international. Mais à la question "T'as un problème?", Arnaud-Pierre et Didier conseilleront toujours aux garçons modernes de répondre "Oui, plein."

Paris-based KAISERIN Magazine was founded by Didier Fitan and Arnaud-Pierre Fourtané in 2006. Bonne nouvelle, parce que conscient qu'il est triste d'être une seule chose à la fois, le semestriel s'ouvre à des horizons transgenres. Sur le thème de "l'extérieur", un hommage nudiste à l'agent Cooper du feuilleton Twin Peaks le dispute à un entretien croisé entre Ariel Kenig, Nicolas Pages (écrivains), Eric Stephany (artiste), David Teboul (cinéaste) et Jean-Pierre Baux (directeur d'image), d'où il ressort qu'ils sont tous "à la rue". / Gérard Lefort.

QUEER ZINES, from Straight to Hell to BUTT Magazine, an inclusive historical survey of over 100 publications that examines the continuing transgressive potential of queer and punk zines. Curated by Philip Aarons and AA Bronson, with Alex Gartenfeld.
Bi-annual magazine KAISERIN declares its editorial aim "to re-establish the art magazine as something militant and committed". Each issue is presented in the format of a portfolio, featuring numbered works of drawings, photographs, and texts. And while certainly working in a glossy format, KAISERIN's independence, queer sensibility, reduced size, selection of young artists, and sense of the political male body put it in the trajectory of a queer zine. Issue #02 is themed "collective ecstasy" and features Bruce LaBruce's orgy photographs from the basement of the Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, in which artist Slava Mogutin partakes. Nicolas Wagner photographs his ex-boyfriends in various seductive poses; photographer Christian Siekmeier "looks at architecture the way he looks at a man's body." Parler des hommes, les montrer mais les laisser respirer face aux diktats des magazines de mode masculins, voilà le credo de KAISERIN qui, avec son troisième numéro (premier semestre 2008), semble enfin avoir trouvé l'équilibre parfait entre photos tendrement érotiques, liberté éditoriale totale, textes en roue libre, homosexualité assumée et maquette qui évite de tomber dans la prétention graphique. Art and arses, French fagzine KAISERIN's finish may be pristine, but it's punk at heart.
Because you can never have too many naked boys, especially naked French boys, we're delighted to announce the arrival of the third edition of KAISERIN magazine. Since last year this bilingual, bi-annual arty fagzine has been gathering speed and gaining kudos for being what lazy journalists (moi?) are calling the French answer to BUTT. Aesthetically KAISERIN is a beauty - real attention to detail throughout, heaps of photos, beautiful illustrations and various bits of writing all generally pegged to one theme - issue three's is 'Bucolique' which roughly translates as: 'The Pastoral'. If that all sounds a bit wanky, and not in a good way, fear not, for those who like a little arse with their art are well provided for too - there's hot boys a plenty - not all of them actually French - but all of them certainly foxy, and most importantly all exercising that liberal French attitude to nudity - saucissons ahoy! "They are just guys we meet in bars or that the photographers know, normal guys, you know," says Arnaud-Pierre Fourtané nonchalantly. Arnaud is one half of the duo behind KAISERIN. His other half, romantically and professionally speaking, is Didier Fitan. Fitan's background is in graphic design whereas Arnaud himself was a fashion consultant: "We don't do clothes shoots - it doesn't interest us, we don't really want to work with label promoters," says Arnaud. The mag bills itself as being for 'boys with problems', a euphemism for being gay taken from a song by synth pop legends Soft Cell. "I liked the idea of reclaiming that idea, and maybe of reaffirming it, and of just saying that maybe having problems isn't such a bad thing," says Arnaud. As for the actually name: KAISERIN - it comes from a metro stop on the U-Bahn in Berlin, well that and the fact that it looked nice and sounded nice. Fitting really. / Patrick Welch

Gay men are so easy to please: take a diva back from rehab and a straight male celeb “is he, isn’t he” cock-teasing interview and here is a mag, wrapped in adverts for male escorts. Well, not anymore girlfriends! It’s about time too, now that the average metrosexual reads Attitude for grooming, waxing and plucking tips. What these new titles share is erect penises, rolled into culture, rolled into a pocket-sized A5 format. These magazines bring back the time when gay publications were illicit, bought discreetly in back alleys and circulated under the coat. Butt (Amsterdam) is probably the granddaddy of them all. Hot on the heels of Butt are other titles, including Pablo Internacional (London), a magazine about men and architecture. Our two favourites are KAISERIN (Paris) and DIK (Warsaw). Créé par les graphistes Didier Fitan et Arnaud-Pierre Fourtané, il est moins radical dans la forme que BUTT (format intermédiaire, mélange de couleur et de noir et blanc) et propose des textes extrêmement courts. C'est surtout plus une revue d'images que de contenu, mais les photos sont belles : on recommande en particulier dans le dernier les Polaroïd de Bruce LaBruce. Deuxième édition du magazine KAISERIN
Le deuxième numéro de KAISERIN, "a magazine for boys with problems", vient de paraître. On peut y découvrir une série de photographies du cinéaste Bruce LaBruce, un texte de Guy Walter (directeur des Subsistances et de la Villa Gillet à Lyon). L'essai est confirmé, KAISERIN N°2 est aussi beau, informatif et décalé que le premier. Disponible à Lyon aux Subsistances, à la librairie Descours, à l'I.A.C. de Villeurbanne et sur les différents sites de la Biennale d'art contemporain.

Being an all-female crew at Grafik Towers, with little male temptation other than the autograph-hunting anoraks perpetually posted outside our window (ready to pounce on unsuspecting BBC celebs, and not design journalists, we might add), the arrival of KAISERIN magazine on our doormat caused something of a stir. Despite its target audience being "boys with problems" and editorial dedications to Homopunk and illustrated "wanking hands", Grafik certainly won't let the sexual orientation of its subjects stand in the way of crowbarring a little male anatomy into the mag - especially when alluring design is abundantly added to the mix. The brainchild of Parisian designers Didier Fitan and Arnaud-Pierre Fourtané, KAISERIN aims to provide alternative icons for the high-cultured, connoisseurial homosexual. In a B5 fanzine format, the luxuriously printed and papered handbook offers a platform from which suitably male and problem-added artists, photographers, designers and writers can broadcast their work. "Our editorial line aims to re-establish the art magazine as something militant and committed", explains Arnaud-Pierre Fourtané. "Each issue features a main theme (in this case 'la deliquescence') and intends to be like an exhibition on paper."
Selecting a font structure based on the contrast between robust Swiss and more sophisticated Victorian typefaces, Fourtané aimed for a very French "bourgeois décadent" style, emphasised by elegant clean design, a striking use of pattern and, not least, ample coat of arms. With issue two dedicated to "collectivist ecstasy", the pair are currently accepting contributions: suitably delinquent so-and-sos know where to apply.

Zalozony zostal przez grafika Didiera Fitana i historyka sztuki wspólczesnej Arnauda Pierre'a Fourtané'a. Pismo wychodzi dwa razy w roku. Drukowane jest we Francji i sprzedawane na calym swiecie w starannie wyselekcjonowanych ksiegarniach, galeriach oraz butikach. W Polsce dostepne jest w warszawskim concept store Fashion_By. Mozna je równiez kupic za posrednictwem strony internetowej. W "Kaiserinie" prezentowane sa prace fotografików, ilustratorów, dizajnerów i poetów, których twórczosc lacza watki gejowskie. Na kartach pierwszego numeru znalazly sie miedzy innymi: prace szwedzkiego artysty Nicklasa Hultmana, projekt parku idealnego do seksualnych schadzek gejów autorstwa Mickaëla Tramoya i poezja Constantina P. Cavafy'ego. Nie zabraklo równiez polskiego akcentu. Didier i Arnaud spedzili w RP wakacje i naprawde niezle sie bawili. KAISERIN mag is the Parisian bastard child of BUTT: a bit more stylish, a bit more Left Bank, but still showing plenty of arse. It's the biannual avant-garde gay magazine "for boys with problems". Dernier-né, le français KAISERIN - poétiquement sous-titré "a magazine for boys with problems" - qui, s'il n'a pas peur de montrer des bites, le fait en toute conscience.

BUTT, KAISERIN, Triangul'ère : vous ne trouverez aucune de ces revues chez votre marchand de journaux. Dans des registres différents, elles posent pourtant un regard singulier sur l'homosexualité.
(...) Au premier regard posé sur les couvertures de BUTT et de KAISERIN, stupeur ! Mais où sont les pecs, les tablettes, les gueules d'anges, les regards aguicheurs ? Une aisselle et un téton cernés de petits coeurs tatoués à l'encre d'un côté, un garçon à l'embonpoint prononcé accroupi sur une table, baskets blanches cul nul de l'autre. Mais que veut-on nous dire ? (...) Diffusé de façon confidentielle, BUTT touche une population d'homos branchés, familiers des cultures alternatives et cosmopolites (tout est en anglais). Ce sont plus ou moins les mêmes que cible le petit dernier, KAISERIN. "En plus artistique et plus intello" remarque Christian [webdesigner lyonnais de 34 ans] qui est également devenu lecteur du "Magazine for boys with problems". Ses fondateurs, Didier Fitan et Arnaud-Pierre Fourtané, revendiquent le caractère élitiste de KAISERIN, "il y en a marre du nivellement par le bas". L'idée est de prendre le contre-pied d'une "esthétique bâtie autour d'icônes et de modes complaisantes", confie Arnaud-Pierre avant d'ajouter : "on entend mélanger beau, utile et intelligent". Dans le premier numéro, on peut découvrir les oeuvres de deux Lyonnais : un très beau texte intitulé Je t'aime déliquescence d'Emmanuel Arlot et le travail graphique sur "les lieux publics de sexualité en direct" de Mickaël Tramoy. On y croisera au hasard un poète qui "écrit en marchand et part peu en week-end", un artiste parisien qui photographie des "bonhommes de neige postmodernes et des garçons hétérosexuellement sensibles". Avec son copain, il publie le premier numéro de KAISERIN, le magazine des garçons à problèmes.

Quelle a été la genèse de KAISERIN ?
Arnaud-Pierre et moi sommes tous deux graphistes. On trouvait qu'en France, il n'y avait pas grand chose dans le genre magazine pédé-arty, alors que, par exemple, la Hollande a BUTT. On y travaille depuis un an et demi. Dans la forme, l'idée était de faire un vrai objet design, et pour le contenu, d'allier nos recherches sur le graphisme avec des sujets liés à l'homosexualité, en tout cas, aux garçons. On passe de photos de Donatien Veismann à des poèmes de Stéphane Bouquet, d'une playlist du duo Matmos à des photos de nu du cinéaste Sébastien Lifshitz.

D'où vient le nom KAISERIN ?
D'une station de métro de Berlin qui s'appelle Kaiserin-Augusta. En allemand, Kaiserin veut dire impératrice. On aimait bien le sens, très pédé. Mais aussi la consonance. Et enfin, visuellement, en typo Helvetica, on trouvait que c'était vraiment beau. Quant à la baseline, "le magazine des garçons à problèmes", ça vient d'une chanson de Soft Cell qui s'appelle Martin, où Marc Almond chante à un moment "Martin is a boy with problems" et si on continue à écouter les paroles, on comprend qu'il a des doutes sur son identité sexuelle. Pour nous, cette formulation renvoie aussi à feu "la chronique du garçon en chandail" de Laurent Bon sur France Inter le samedi matin, qu'on adorait.

Pourquoi ce premier numéro a-t-il pour thème la déliquescence ?
Ca vient d'une autre chanson, Space Moment de Stereolab. C'est déliquescence dans le double sens du mot : à la fois l'idée d'un corps qui passe à l'état liquide, mais aussi une forme de décadence, de perte, d'abandon.
